The perfect wedding flower …

The dahlia. I have been enamored with this flower since I began my search for the perfect wedding flower. Of course, my very favorite flower is the peony, but because I was getting married in late July and I was hoping to use an in-season flower, and because peonies can be exceedingly expensive, I found dahlias to be the perfect fit. But, the more I found out about this flower, the more I became enamored of it.

There are a multitude of varieties that range from anemones (flat petaled florals often with different colored centers) to multi-layered, dinner plate size soft florals in too many colors to count. I loved how a bride recently created an entire bridal bouquet out of dahlias…

This flower has truly won my heart. And when I found out the local dahlia society is holding their annual show in East Wenatchee this weekend, I was super excited to find out more!

So, I went to my friend Linda, who happens to be the chair of the North Central Washington Dahlia Society. She invited me to her home and to the home of Mike, another society member to view their gardens!

A dahlia variety created in 1948 called “Miss Rose Fletcher” grown by Mike in his East Wenatchee garden.

Linda, chair of the NCW Dahlia Society, and her “Chimacum Troy” mini-ball dahlia in dark red

(even the cutting-pile is beautiful!)

This one is called “I’m A Hottie” isn’t she though?

The variety is staggering, isn’t it? You could create so many different looks simply from choosing a different variety of dahlia! I do believe I’ll be a member of the dahlia society at some point in my life!

If you are in Wenatchee this weekend, you MUST check out the gorgeous blooms that will be gracing the judging tables. You can even enter your own dahlias into the novice level of the show! Competitors from around the state will be competing for blue ribbons and a place at the head table.

2012 NCW Dahlia Society Show time & location: Show begins *Saturday at 10 am at the Wenatchee Valley Mall and runs through Sunday at 3pm. (*Corrected to actual show start time)
