Their life’s work

Their story can not be summed up in a tidy little blog post. Their story is made up of a million small moments, unique choices, tiny gestures of kindness, that can not be adequately accounted for here.

Fifty years ago, they made one choice that lead to many more amazing moments and choices in their lives…my parents married one another.

The 8mm color film shows the beautiful California ceremony in stilted frames, yet somehow captures the essence of the day–they were in love and nothing more mattered.

This has carried through their lives to this day. At their anniversary celebration a few weeks ago, my sister, brother and niece performed, “Love Is All You Need”…

This was one of the many telling moments of the evening…we kazood our hearts out for them! And, even though we were being a little goofy, there was not one person in that room who didn’t believe in the message of this song after seeing the love my parents have for each other, and the love that each of the people in that room have for them.

My sister, Kristin, brother, Michael, and niece, Mesa, performed another song, which was so incredibly beautiful, I have to share it with you…

One of my favorite parts of the night was when, after my dad serenaded my mom, and we heard toasts from family and friends, we gave a standing ovation to my parents. We stood and applauded and cheered the work they have accomplished together, through their love of one another and their love of the people they have brought into their lives. We stood and clapped because this is their life’s work…choosing love. Choosing to love like no two people I have ever witnessed in my entire life. Choosing to sacrifice and dig deep and to cultivate their love and share that bounty with those around them, even when it’s the harder choice. This is why we stood, this is why 100 of their closest friends and family gathered, this is why, I believe, love IS  all you need.
