I don’t know how it is you are so familiar to me – or why it feels less like I am getting to know you and more as though I am remembering who you are. How every smile, every whisper brings me closer to the impossible conclusion that I have know you before, I have loved you before – in another time, a different place – some other existence. – Lang Leav -#atlasandeliaphotography #love #soulmates #california

best of 2014 | seattle wedding photographer

While it’s difficult to attempt to sum up the year in a “best of” post, I’m going to do just that–attempt.

These images are a collection of the three main things I want my work to be about:

Connection (to one another, to our own humanity, to nature).

Honest, story-telling, moments.

An artful approach to life.

Oh! Be sure to see the REALLY exciting news at the end of the post…

And now for the exciting news:

I’ve recently begun to work with Kirk Mastin of Mastin Labs doing social media for his company. In case you’re not familiar with Mastin Labs, they make presets for Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw. I whole-heartedly believe (and have believed long before I began work with the company) these are the very best presets that exist. Ever. Each of the images in this post have been edited with Mastin Labs Lightroom presets. I specifically used the Portra 160 preset as well as the new Ilford black and white presets (mostly Pan F, which I’m a sucker for already!)

The reason why these are the very best presets out there, in my opinion, is because the digital files perfectly match their film counterparts. This matters to me because as I begin to shoot more and more film, this makes my workflow that much easier (and faster)! And secondly, I like my images and their look to be based in some sort of concrete ideas about color that Kodak (and other film companies) created long ago.

If you want to check the presets out for yourself, here’s a link to purchase: https://mastinlabs.com/?ref=26. Because I believe in these presets SO much, Kirk has made me an affiliate partner, which means I get a little back, when you purchase the presets with that link!

This year has been really beautiful for me, though at times, a struggle. I’ve been looking for meaning all over the place, trying new things and pouring myself into the weddings and couples that I’ve photographed. After all of the moments of worry, and feeling a bit stuck, I can say with confidence that witnessing human connection (in all that that entails), daily, in life, (and through the work that I do) is what pushes me to be better and will always be one of the most moving, motivating and awe-inspiring aspects of life for me. It continually fascinates me, brings me to tears, makes me want to scream, and makes me want to learn how to be a more caring, more giving, more complete, loving human. So, I have to thank my couples and their families and their friends for inviting me week after week to participate in their love and their lives and for moving me to a place where love just is. Simply and beautifully, it just is, out in the open and just there for us all to experience. Thank you.

curating a life in love

When you step back to look at your life, what do you see? Where are you placing your efforts, your attention? I read a quote by William James a while back that said, “My experience is what I agree to attend to,” meaning: your life is made up of the things (the people, the places, the media, the hobbies) that you give your attention to, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

I am personally in the process of taking stock of what I put my efforts toward, where I place my attention. It’s opened my eyes so much to what I really value and what I waste my time on (read: the amount of time I spend on social media). But, it’s been truly therapeutic to step back from the day to day and then work to remove the things that don’t serve the kind of life I want to live and to add things that create what ultimately makes up my life.

As I witnessed Karen and Matt’s beautiful wedding celebration at Mountain Springs Lodge in Leavenworth, WA, I felt like I was seeing two very special people who really believe in the power of curating their life; of working diligently to include things (people, experiences) in their life that add value and purposely exclude the kinds of things that detract from that. In this way, they are very much an inspiration to the people in their lives. They are most definitely an inspiration to me. Karen and Matt, thank you for including me in your day. I couldn’t be happier for you!

Life in the in between

You can just sense it. Feel it, really. It’s a connection that is bonded, not by big gestures, but by subtlety. By a whisper, a glance, the small things that make up this thing we call life. Rachel and Matt are content and even most happy when life is quiet together. This is the way they love…in the in-between. There is so much beauty in that in-between and I love when I see that on people’s faces as they look at one another. My wish for these two is to take that amazing way of being they have for each other and continue to share that. It’s a gift to see how beautiful life can be in those moments. Thanks, you two, for reminding me of that!

Allison & Jeff | The Wedding!! | Sneak Peek

This is only the beginning. The very start of something good…really good! Of course, I’m talking about Allison and Jeff’s wedding day! This day marks the first day of the rest of their lives…but more, it marks the first day of the rest of their lives, together! I am REALLY, REALLY excited to share the entire wedding with you Tuesday, but for now…a sneak peek of their gorgeous celebration! And let me tell you, it was a dream to photograph their wedding at the Wenatchee River Lodge! So much love to you two!!!

Alex & Erik | Engaged!!

What do you say, Percy? I am thinking
of sitting out on the sand to watch
the moon rise. Full tonight.
So we go, and the moon rises, so beautiful it

makes me shudder, makes me think about
time and space, makes me take
measure of myself: one iota
pondering heaven. Thus we sit,

I thinking how grateful I am for the moon’s
perfect beauty and also, oh! How rich
it is to love the world. Percy, meanwhile,
leans against me and gazes up into
my face. As though I were
his perfect moon.
-Mary Oliver

The way he gazes upon her face, as though she were his perfect moon… A reflection of light onto him. That’s what their love looks like to me.

Alex and Erik will be married this very weekend at the Tierra Learning Center in Leavenworth, WA! And, I am ridiculously excited about it! First, here are few images from their engagement session…

Katie & Jerry | The Wedding!

A wedding on a mountain in another country couldn’t have been more fitting for Katie and Jerry. Their love of travel and skiing made it the perfect setting for their marriage. Complete with family and friends joining from Seattle and as far off as Slovakia, it was the just the best beginning to their official lives together! Katie and Jerry know how to have fun and they made sure this wonderful weekend in Whistler was a good time for all! They even managed to ski down the mountain just after they were married and before the party started at the Bearfoot Bistro in Whistler Village!

James and I were honored to be a part of your celebration, Katie and Jerry, and we wish you many, many more adventures throughout your life together!!!

Halley & Chuck | Armaweddin’

They couldn’t have been more ready…

They had their gas masks on hand, compasses out, plenty of food and candles…their hashtag set to: “#armaweddin“…

If they survived the apocalypse, they were going to be married!

Halley & Chuck were calm and fully prepared for the future ahead of them. Whatever lay ahead, these two are in it together now, and they are crazy excited about the prospect of all that will entail…

As several of their friends and family said throughout the day, spending time with Halley and Chuck just makes life better. I completely agree…you both truly make me a happier person just knowing you! I enjoyed every minute of our time together! Congratulations, Halley & Chuck!!!

Engaged In Seattle | {Katie & Jerry}

The first thing I saw when I walked into their Seattle condo was a photo Jerry had taken during some time he’d spent traveling in Asia. Second, was their dog, Molly. Third, was spread of breakfast goodies on the kitchen table. I thought, “These two are my people…” and simultaneously thought, “How cute are they?!”

Travel is in their blood. Katie studied abroad in Hong Kong and Jerry’s family is from Slovakia. And they are both, in general, explorers of the world. But, since they met, they are quite content exploring the city they live in. And besides, there’s plenty to see in the city of Seattle.

We took a rather wet walk with their new puppy over to the waterfront, where she decided she wasn’t as adventurous as her owners. We then decided to warm up at one of their (and every-other Seattlite’s) favorite bars, Pesos!! (Again, my kind of people!) And from there, we took a trip to the new Chihuly Glass and Garden just under the Space Needle!

Katie and Jerry were up for fun and exploring wherever we went and I couldn’t have had a better time sharing in their world, even for just the afternoon. I am thrilled to continue getting to know these two amazing people! Congratulations, my friends! I can not wait to celebrate with you in Whistler!

Make sure to leave some love for Katie & Jerry below!

Meghan & Danny | Engaged!

Wet weather be damned…

We met in Leavenworth at the Forest Service ranger station and decided to hop in their car and go.

Off we went, up Highway 2, the rain drip drip dripping and the windshield wipers, wipe, wipe, wiping.

They were happy as can be in the front seat, ready for another of what was just one of many adventures they have taken, and will take-together.

Meghan and Danny seem to me, in the brief time I’ve known them, to be adventurers at heart…always seeking new horizons, new ideas, new ways of looking at things.

They are the exact kind of people I love to be around…because they not only want this for themselves, but they want to share these adventures with the people around them.

Our time together was brief, but I have no doubt this will be just one of many times we go trek together out and about … I look forward to learning more about them, and from them…

How cute is the one where Meghan’s glasses are all fogged up?!Congratulations to you two on your engagement!

Feel free to leave your congratulations for Meghan and Danny below, in the comments!
