Inspired By This…& That | Pantone Color of the Year 2013

I love color…in another life I think I would have been a color theorist. It fascinates me that colors or a combination of colors can conjure up feelings of happiness or melancholy. I also closely follow Pantone…basically the color bible. So, I anxiously awaited their latest color trend…

They describe this color as:  “Lively. Radiant. Lush… A color of elegance and beauty
that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.”

I thought to myself, what an amazing color to incorporate into your wedding!

1. Ombre wedding cake

2. Green canoe wedding portrait

3. Emerald green mojito signature cocktail

4. Green suede Gucci heel wedding shoes

5. Emerald green bridesmaid’s dresses

6. Wedding Invitations with emerald green and soft pink

7. Emerald green bow tie for groom’s

8. Emeral green drop earring

9. Green escort cards

Inspired By This…& That | Holiday Party

BHLDNAt first, when BHLDN came out last year, I didn’t get it. I mean, I was completely smitten with the dresses and accessories, but hadn’t a clue that “BHLDN” was short for “Beholden”…sometimes it takes me a while with these things. It certainly took no time at all for me to fall in love with the aesthetic of the lovely items they have curated…here’s a sampling of holiday dresses, shoes and accessories that are currently on sale! I hope you get inspired this Monday…

#30daysofthanks | Thirty Days of Thanksgiving

Well, we’re half way through November! Can you believe it? I feel like time is just flying right now. So, I wanted to stop for a minute, to reflect and give thanks. I haven’t been posting my #30daysofthanks this year, but it seems like the right time to list each of the things I am thankful for this year!

1. For a home and community that is safe and secure.

2. For a family who has supported me no matter what choices I have made. And for my second family, the Weilers, who are truly some of the best people I have ever known.

3. For James who continually encourages me to be a better person.

4. For coffee.

5. For struggle, which gives me pause to reflect on what is truly important and reminds me of those who are far more burdened than I.

6. For my friends. You put a smile on my face, no matter what.

7. For those photographers in the industry who are not only paving the way for people like myself, but also setting the bar higher for everyone in the future.

8. For my couples who trust me and give me the freedom to photograph them with my own vision and give me the honor of documenting one of the most important days of their lives!

9. For my education.

10. For cranberry sauce. And mashed potatoes, and turkey and stuffing, and green beans and gravy and pumkin pie and pecan pie and apple pie…!

11. For film–it has opened my eyes to a whole new way of seeing.

12. For all of the wedding-related business people who have been willing to collaborate and share their knowledge, in hopes that we can make a better wedding industry, locally!
13. For champagne…straight out of the bottle. Oh yes, that is how I roll 😉
14. For babies everywhere who have convinced me I might want one of you someday…and simultaneously drawn me in with your cute little smooshy faces, while making me cringe with your screeching cries–reminding me that motherhood (eventually) will be incredible…but difficult. Very, very difficult.
15. For you, my faithful blog readers. Blogging is hard work, but if I connect with you, even just one of you, in some way, it is worth every minute of it.
I’d love to hear what you’re thankful for right now! Feel free to leave a comment, or if you’re in town, we can get together over coffee, or if you’re not from here, let’s Skype/FaceTime! I’d love to connect somehow with each and every one of you!

The Right Pair of Shoes + Making Decisions Before You Panic

Friends, today I’m in a bit of panic mode. You see, lately I’ve paired down and paired back when it comes to buying things like a new pair of shoes. Some (ahem, James) might not agree when they look at my collection tucked neatly away in my closet, but, it’s true. Whereas even just a few years ago, new shoes were the priority, now it’s things like saving for a new lens, or that new perfect chair for my office.

Secondly, it seems, that whenever I do decide to go all out and buy a totally impractical pair of suede, platform maryjanes, my good friends (dogs) Abbey and Parker decide it’s their new chew toy. This has happened more times than I’d like to count (I’d say the running tally is somewhere in the neighborhood of $873,271 in lost shoe costs).

So, today, because I am shopping for a specific occasion, and that occasion happens to be tomorrow night, and I live in a small town with limited resources and hence the reason I am panicking because I no longer own even ONE pair of acceptable dress shoes!

So today, I hunt. I will hunt them down and find them…and if they don’t match my dress, I will hunt one of those down too.

Now, I realize this truly has nothing to do with business, or weddings, but in general, this has been my life lately. Sort of living in panic mode that I won’t find the right (insert latest worry here). Whether that’s the right branding, the right outsourcing company, the right clients… etc., ad nauseum. And the result it a constant state of things feeling like, well, the dogs have just eaten my favorite pair of shoes and I have nothing to wear (in other words, I’m a mess)!

So, today, as I hunt for shoes (and possibly a dress, shhh, don’t tell James), I know I’ll be spending more than part of that time, hunting for some answers to a few other problem areas in my life and business right now.

I’ve listened to a few people podcasts this week (namely James Moes and Jen Huang on the My Musea podcast), and after hearing about their thoughts on this, I think one answer might be, to write down what my ultimate goal is (my overarching vision) and then to find out do these things that I worry about lead me to that solution. Will this plan help me find Kate Spade in Wenatchee? No. But, will it help me make decisions before I am forced to make that decision, and the result is worry rather than worthwhile choices? Yes!

Wish me luck people, wish me luck.

Tradition! Tradition! + A Giveaway!

Traditioonnnnn! Tradition! It’s a song from the musical “Fiddler On The Roof”, but it’s also a value I hold dear. Especially when it comes to the Christmas season. I have many, many traditions on the list. I would venture to say  Christmas in the Stevens’ household has been held in the exact same manner for going on 40 years. I have only spent three different years away from my parent’s home since I was a child. It is important to me that things are done in a proper fashion. This is why I’ve firmly boycotted the use of a Starbucks Red Cup prior Thanksgiving for every year since their inception! And, it is why I do NOT listen to Christmas music before Black Friday rolls around…ahem. Until this year.

This year, I have successfully avoided the Cup that Shall Not Be Named, thus far. Partly because I usually drink iced drinks, but because I’ve begun making my own yummy coffee at home. But this weekend, something caught hold of me, maybe it’s the Christmas bug everyone’s been getting, and I typed “Bing Crosby Christmas” into my Spotify, plugged it in to our home system, and last Sunday, our home became full-on Christmas central! And tradition be damned…I’ve loved every minute of it!

So, to celebrate tradition, or rather, breaking tradition, and because I WILL NOT CAVE on the Red Cup issue, I’m giving away a pound of my new, favorite local coffee from Blue Star Roasters! All you need to do is :

1. Like Atlas & Elia Photography on Facebook OR follow Atlas & Elia Photography on Twitter OR follow Atlas & Elia Photography on Pinterest! AND THEN

2. Leave a comment below telling me what is your favorite Christmas song?!

That’s it! And, even though I’ll be listening to Christmas music every day until Christmas, there will be a moratorium on Thanksgiving Day…because it’s tradition.

And the winner is…. Chris Robinson! Congrats! You win a pound off Blue Star Roasters Highway 20 House Blend! Email me to redeem! kathryn@atlasandelia.com

Social Media Free | It’s a Choice

Yesterday, I told myself, you know what, “You can do anything you want today…James is off from work, and you should spend time with him, so you can just hang out!” What did I do though? I spent a good two hours in the morning reading blogs, checking Twitter, you know–the usual.

And, what did that mean for my time with James? Well, it meant I wasn’t going to be able to make him breakfast, go for a snowy walk in the neighborhood. It meant less time snuggling, less hot chocolate breaks, less time being present with him. I had lots of work to finish, so I did have to make time for that, but by wasting a good portion of my morning, I made a decision that the “anything I want to do today” was going to be wasting time online, not what is important to me.

I have a choice, each and every day, to make my real life a priority, or to make my online life the priority. To give all of my time to my job, or to give a concerted amount of time to work, in order to live my actual life to its fullest. When I make the choice to wile away my time online with no real purpose, I am actively choosing to disregard the import things in my life.

Today, James isn’t here, he’s back at work. I don’t have the choice to walk out of my office and into the living room to give him a kiss on the cheek, “just because”. That moment is gone. These distractions in my life are a HUGE problem for me. It’s pretty much my only vice, I’d say. So, how do I make sure I am more fully involved in my life, free from those distractions? Well, one thing I’m trying, is to go “social media free” on the weekends (this weekend I was better, but not perfect). Other things I’ve tried (and failed at) are choosing a block of time during each weekday to check social media and to post on it. I’d like to try that again, in hopes that I will realize how much more real life I have time to participate in, without all the distraction of having to post every thought and meal I’ve eaten!!

What are your tips to keep the distractions at bay? Thank you, in advance, for your help on this…I want to tackle this problem head-on and come out on the other side with more time, freedom and choice!
