a photography session with Oveth

If you live in Wenatchee you probably know who Oveth Martinez is, or at least you have seen his name on a t-shirt. For those of you who don’t live here, Oveth is the owner of Oveth Photography. He’s a portrait photographer that is now focusing on commercial photography! I spent much of the morning shooting with my brand new (or new to me) medium format FILM camera! I have been wanting to shoot portraits on film for a long time now and this was the perfect time to start. Since Oveth is a photographer, he was very willing to let me use him as a test subject of sorts.

It was so interesting to shoot with film. Everyone says this, but it truly forces you to slow down. I used my iPhone with the “Light Meter” app to meter the frame. I then carefully chose my settings on the camera, brought the camera to my eye and framed up the shot. I diligently worked to manually focus the image, drew in a slow and steady breath, then pressed the shutter. Let me tell you, it is LOUD! And, the entire time I would take the photo and then IMMEDIATELY go to look at the back of the camera (it’s called chimping and it’s a bad habit, but it’s part of my work flow and I seriously did it each and every time I took a photo…expecting to see the image on the LCD screen on the back of the camera body!) It was silly..I’m hoping that by shooting film, I will break this habit and learn to slow down with all of my shooting. It felt good. Really, good. I ended up shooting just 4 rolls of film. I will now send those rolls to Richard Photo Lab and wait…patiently wait. In the meantime, I decided to shoot some digital images as well to tide me over!

Thanks, Oveth for spending some time with me! You were so wonderful to work with!
